No. 4 Texas Out-Duels No. 10 Mississippi State in 3-1 Marquee Matchup
AUSTIN, Texas – In a battle of top-10 powerhouses, the No. 4 Texas Longhorns leaned on a historic pitching performance to secure a 3-1 series-opening victory over the No. 10 Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday night. The arms race was on full display at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, as the Longhorns' staff combined to match a program record with 19 strikeouts in a nine-inning game.
Texas ace Dylan Volantis was nothing short of dominant, carving through the potent Bulldogs lineup for six scoreless innings. The left-hander matched his career-high with 12 strikeouts, scattering just three hits and throwing 107 pitches in an overpowering start to improve his record to 7-0. The Longhorns provided just enough offense to back him up. An RBI groundout from Ashton Larson in the second inning opened the scoring, and a pair of run-scoring singles in the fifth from Aiden Robbins and Anthony Pack Jr. extended the lead to 3-0.
Mississippi State's lone run came in the eighth inning on a leadoff solo home run from Gehrig Frei, which cut the deficit to 3-1. The Bulldogs managed to put the tying run on base later in the frame, but the Texas bullpen shut the door, with Sam Cozart striking out the side in the ninth to earn his seventh save and punctuate the Longhorns' historic night on the mound. Mississippi State starter Tomas Valincius took the loss despite a solid effort, allowing three runs over five innings.
