Scouting Report
Derrek Cooper is a 6-1, 205-212 pound bell-cow back from Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, FL) who won a 1A state title as a junior (905 yards, 13 TD at 7.3 ypc) and then produced 1,597 yards and 19 TD as a senior, winning the Nat Moore Trophy and Broward 4A-1A Offensive Player of the Year. The stored 4-star/#109 national rank understates him: ESPN ranked him the No. 1 RB and No. 7 overall in 2026, Rivals had him No. 4 RB/No. 74, On3 graded him 92, and the 0.9529 composite reflects a fringe five-star with only 247Sports (93, No. 10 RB) as the dissenting grade. He chose Texas on July 20, 2025 over Florida State, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State, and is now an enrolled freshman wearing Bijan Robinson's No. 5.
Physical Profile
A genuine big-back frame at 6-1 and 205 in high school, now listed at 212 on the Texas roster, with the room to play at 215-220 without losing burst. The athletic profile is rare for the size: a state-qualifying sophomore sprinter with a 10.77 electronic 100m plus 200m and long jump qualifying marks, and 247Sports flagged 'bright green' speed and explosion scores. He is not a low-hipped, wiggle-heavy back; his frame carries the same lean-forward, pad-level-down posture whether he is carrying the ball or playing hybrid linebacker/safety, which is why some staffs projected him to the back seven. The one physical caveat in the film is hip and ankle flexibility, which 247's Andrew Ivins noted as the lever that would unlock more of his raw athleticism.
Play Style
Cooper is a downhill, one-cut power back who hits the hole with urgency and tempo rather than patience. He presses the line, makes a decisive cut and gets his pads down, finishing runs through contact with a forward lean that gains yardage after first contact on nearly every touch. In space he is a straight-line accelerator with track speed, not a juke artist. His two-way background shows up in how he attacks defenders, treating linebackers the way he tackled ball carriers on the other side. In the passing game he is comfortable catching on the move on swings and screens and can be flexed out. 247Sports' player comparison is Raheim Sanders, and that fits: big, fast, physical and productive without being a wiggle back.
Strengths
- Contact balance and core power: consistently falls forward, bounces off arm tackles in tight quarters and turns two-yard runs into six-yard runs, which is exactly the trait that survives the jump to SEC defenses.
- Verified long speed for a 210-pound back: a 10.77 electronic 100m and all-county 4x100 relay credentials mean the home-run gear is real, not a hand-timed camp number.
- Three-down receiving value: productive on swing and screen passes with natural hands (six catches for 89 yards and a TD as a senior in a run-heavy scheme, plus a 31-yard reception at the Under Armour game), so he is not limited to check-down duty.
- Toughness and football IQ validated at three phases: 46 tackles, 4 sacks and an interception as a junior linebacker/safety plus multiple blocked punts on tape, and MVP running back at the Rivals Five-Star camp against elite competition.
Areas to Improve
- Pass protection: identified by 247Sports as the gap in his three-down package; he has the frame and physicality but the technique, angle recognition and anchor mechanics need coaching before he is trusted on third down against SEC blitz packages.
- Lower-body flexibility and lateral creativity: he is a north-south, timing-and-cuts runner rather than a make-you-miss back, and better hip mobility would add a lateral dimension to his game and reduce the number of square-shouldered hits he absorbs.
- Volume and durability track record: 94 carries in one senior box score sample and a rotational role in the Chaminade-Madonna offense means he has not yet handled a 20-plus carry SEC workload; the college game will test whether the frame holds up at that usage.
College Projection
He arrived at Texas already drawing public praise from Steve Sarkisian ('hard-charging, plays physical, plays fast, very natural football player') and ran third behind transfers Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers coming out of fall camp. Expect a real rotational role as a true freshman in short-yardage, goal-line and change-of-pace packages with 6-10 touches per game, growing as the season goes on. With both backs ahead of him being transfers with limited remaining eligibility, Cooper projects as the lead back by 2027 and a two-year feature back with 1,000-plus yard upside once pass protection is solved. Sarkisian recruited him with an all-purpose role in mind, which is the right usage.
NFL Outlook
The measurables profile (6-1, 212, sub-10.8 100m, receiving ability, three-down frame) is the NFL prototype for a lead back, and the Raheim Sanders comparison is a fair floor. If he proves the receiving and protection value at Texas, he has Day 2 draft potential after three seasons, with Round 1 upside if the production and durability match the traits. The gap between his ESPN/Rivals grades and 247's is essentially a disagreement over whether he is a special runner or a very good athlete who runs well, and that question will be settled by how much he creates on his own against SEC fronts.
Best Fit
A pro-style, play-action heavy offense with a physical zone and gap run game that lets him build tempo downhill and wants a back who can also catch out of the backfield. Texas under Sarkisian, with Chad Scott's RB room, is close to ideal: the offense has a track record of getting big backs the ball in space (Bijan Robinson, Jonathon Brooks) and a deep passing attack that opens lanes. A wide-zone system that asks a back to bounce laterally and win with wiggle would leave his best traits on the table.
Player Comparison
Both are highly-rated prospects from elite Florida prep programs with similar size profiles (6'0", 210 lbs range) who generated significant Power 5 interest despite limited public film exposure. Diggs also came from a talent-rich South Florida environment and demonstrated the versatility and competitive fire that made him attractive to major programs, ultimately developing into an elite playmaker despite not being the most physically imposing prospect.
