Physical Profile

Prototypical pocket-passer frame. He measured 6-3.5 and about 200 pounds with 10-inch hands and a 31-inch vertical on the 2025 camp circuit, was listed 6-3/220 by his senior season, and Alabama's 2026 roster has him at 6-4/229, so he has added close to 30 pounds of functional mass in 18 months without losing the movement skills that made him a varsity point guard. The hand size and thick lower half show up in his ability to drive the ball in bad weather and absorb contact in the pocket. He is not a burner, but 247Sports graded his mobility above-average for the position and Alabama observers describe him as 'not a statue' when a play breaks down. The build is already SEC-ready; the remaining physical development is lower-body explosiveness rather than size.

Play Style

Rhythm-and-timing pocket passer with a live but not overpowering arm who wins with placement, anticipation and pace control. He works a full-field progression, throws receivers open on in-breakers and seam routes, and has enough velocity to drive out-routes to the field. He is comfortable throwing with layered touch over linebackers and can drop deep balls in stride, which explains the touchdown-to-interception ratios (47:3 as a junior, 58:5 as a senior). When forced off his spot he keeps his eyes downfield and can pick up yardage with his legs, but he is a thrower first and does not hunt scramble opportunities. Tidefans' spring assessment compared him to A.J. McCarron: big frame, plus arm, guile and command beyond his years. 247Sports' pro comparison is Daniel Jones.

Strengths

• Ball placement and touch: 247Sports' Andrew Ivins describes him as a passer who 'feathers the football around the yard,' varying speed and trajectory by route. His senior line (193 of 266, 72.6%, 3,484 yards, 58 TD, 5 INT) came after a junior year at 69.6% with 47 TD and 3 INT, so the accuracy is a multi-year trend, not a one-season spike.
• Difficult-throw ability on film: Rivals' scouts wrote that outside of Bryce Underwood-tier arms Julian Lewis... specifically that 'nobody besides Curtis and Henderson put better difficult throws on film than Thomalla,' citing tight-window and off-platform completions despite few competitive fourth quarters in 2025.
• Processing and progression work: both 247Sports and Alabama-beat evaluations single out field vision as more advanced than a typical true freshman, including deep-ball timing and moving to a second read. He ran a pro-style, multi-receiver system at Millard South and threw 7 TD passes in both the state semifinal and the 49-0 championship game, tying the state single-game record twice in one postseason.
• Production and winning: 10,253 career yards, 134 TD, five losses in four seasons as a starter, two state championships, Gatorade and MaxPreps Nebraska Player of the Year, USA Today ALL-USA Midwest captain, Elite 11 finalist.

Areas to Improve

• Level of competition: Nebraska Class A did not test him weekly against SEC-caliber pass rush or coverage disguise, and his own team's dominance (many blowouts) limited high-leverage reps. The adjustment to the speed of college defenses is the primary unknown in every published evaluation.
• Eye discipline: Alabama practice reports note he tends to lock onto his receiver on out-breaking concepts, which will get him picked by SEC boundary corners until he manipulates safeties with his eyes.
• Play extension: 247Sports notes he has the athletic tools to extend plays but does not consistently use them, preferring to stay on schedule in the pocket. Learning when to leave the pocket and when to throw it away is a development point.
• Lower-body explosiveness: a 31-inch vertical is adequate, not dynamic. Adding twitch and first-step quickness in the strength program would make his scramble-to-throw game a real weapon rather than an occasional one.

College Projection

Redshirt year in 2026 is the expected path. Alabama named Keelon Russell the starter for the September 5 opener against East Carolina with Austin Mack as the backup, and Thomalla is competing with Tayden Evan-Kaawa and John Gazzaniga for QB3. He got one A-Day drive in April (4 of 5 for 48 yards) and drew the strongest reviews of the freshman group for vision and arm talent. Realistically he is a developmental No. 2 in 2027 and a legitimate contender to start by 2028, depending on whether Russell leaves early. If he does not see a clear path behind Russell, he profiles as an attractive portal target for a pro-style offense, but his own stated goal is the NFL and Alabama's track record with pocket passers fits him.

NFL Outlook

Legitimate NFL profile. 247Sports projects him as a Day 2 (rounds 2-3) selection with multi-year college starter upside, and Rivals moved him to five-star status on the strength of his difficult-throw tape. The frame (6-4, 229, 10-inch hands), accuracy at all three levels, and processing are the traits NFL evaluators pay for at the position; the arm is good rather than elite and the athleticism is functional rather than dynamic, which caps the ceiling below the first-round tier unless he develops the off-script element. Three seasons of SEC film against elite pressure would answer the competition-level question and could push him into the late first round.

Best Fit

Pro-style or NFL-hybrid spread that asks the quarterback to read full progressions from the pocket, mix play-action with dropback timing concepts, and throw with anticipation to intermediate windows. Kalen DeBoer's Alabama offense with Ryan Grubb is a strong scheme fit for his vision-and-placement profile, though beat writers note the system's ceiling is highest with a more dynamic playmaker, so Thomalla's value there is as a high-floor, turnover-averse distributor. A run-heavy RPO or designed-QB-run offense would waste his best traits.
