Scouting Report
A highly-touted combo guard with exceptional physical tools and a high basketball IQ. Goosby is a versatile, two-way player whose feel for the game allows him to make an impact as both a scorer and a facilitator. His combination of size, length, and athleticism gives him a very high floor and significant long-term potential.
Physical Profile
Possesses elite physical measurements for a guard, standing at 6-foot-5 with a reported 6-foot-9 wingspan. He is a fluid, bouncy vertical athlete who can play and finish above the rim in transition. While he needs to add strength to his 186-pound frame to handle contact at the next level, his length and large hands are significant assets on both ends of the floor.
Play Style
Goosby is a smooth and intelligent combo guard who plays with a controlled pace. He uses his tight handle to break down defenders and create separation for his own shot or to facilitate for others. He is an aggressive cutter and thrives in transition where his athleticism shines with highlight-reel dunks. Defensively, he is an instinctual playmaker who leverages his superior length to disrupt passing lanes and challenge shots effectively.
Strengths
- **High Feel for the Game:** Demonstrates an advanced understanding of the game, making quick and efficient decisions with the ball. He is a good passer and cutter, instinctively knowing how to create opportunities for himself and teammates.
- **Defensive Playmaking:** Utilizes his elite length and instincts to be a disruptive force on defense. He generates a high number of steals and blocks for a guard, showcasing terrific playmaking metrics (1.6 steals & 1.3 blocks in one evaluation).
- **Versatility:** Capable of playing and excelling both on and off the ball. His size and skillset allow him to be a multi-positional defender and a flexible piece in various offensive schemes, blending scoring and distributing effectively.
Areas to Improve
- **Consistent Outside Shooting:** While possessing soft touch, his three-point shooting consistency is an area for development. He shot just 25% from three-point range during one EYBL season and can have an elongated release, especially off the dribble.
- **Strength and Finishing Through Contact:** Needs to add muscle to his frame to consistently finish through contact at the collegiate level. He is currently fairly right-hand dominant as a finisher and can be knocked off balance due to a high center of gravity.
- **Ball Handling Under Pressure:** Tends to be a bit upright when dribbling, which can make him susceptible to pressure. Lowering his stance and tightening his handle will be crucial for his development as a primary creator.
College Projection
Expected to make an immediate contribution as a freshman at the University of Texas due to his high basketball IQ, defensive impact, and versatility. He projects as a high-level starter and potential all-conference player as he develops his offensive consistency and adds strength. His ability to blend into an offense and contribute in multiple facets will get him on the floor early in his career.
Best Fit
An up-tempo offensive system that utilizes ball screens and values versatile, high-IQ players who can defend multiple positions. A program that allows him the freedom to operate as both a primary and secondary ball-handler would maximize his skillset as a scorer and playmaker.
