LEAD STORY: Longhorns Complete Historic Comeback, Ascend to No. 1
Texas authored one of the defining wins of the young 2026 season Saturday night in Austin, erasing a 20-point second-half deficit to beat top-ranked Ohio State 24-23 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The comeback defied staggering odds — teams had been 0-223 since 2003 when trailing an AP No. 1 by 17 or more points — before Hollywood Smothers went airborne for the game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds remaining. The Longhorns scored touchdowns on all three of their fourth-quarter possessions, sustained drives of 15, 13, and 12 plays, and converted two fourth downs in their own territory to keep the rally alive.
Arch Manning caught fire after halftime, going 16-for-23 passing in the second half with a touchdown strike to Ryan Wingo.
