SEC Evening Report: Tennessee Reloads Defense Through Portal; Oweh Named SEC Player of the Week

Tennessee Football Banks on Defensive Overhaul in Transfer Portal

Tennessee's 2026 football roster is taking shape, with a clear emphasis on remaking the defense through the transfer portal. The Volunteers added a host of impact players, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, headlined by former five-star prospect and Penn State EDGE rusher Chaz Coleman. Coleman followed his defensive coordinator to Knoxville and is expected to be one of the most feared pass rushers in the SEC. The staff didn't stop there, earning an A+ grade for their EDGE additions by also bringing in Jordan Norman from Tulane, who recorded six sacks last season.

The linebacker corps also received a significant talent infusion. Penn State transfer Amaree Campbell joins a room that unexpectedly retained Arion Carter, creating a deep and versatile group that also earned an A+ grade. The secondary was another major focus, with Tennessee adding nine defensive backs. Key additions include former Auburn starter Kayin Lee at cornerback and Penn State safety Dejuan Lane.

While the defense was rebuilt, questions remain on offense, particularly at quarterback. The Volunteers missed on high-profile targets Sam Leavitt, who chose LSU, and Ty Simpson, who declared for the NFL draft. Tennessee settled for depth piece Ryan Staub, leaving the position's future dependent on the eligibility ruling for Joey Aguilar and the development of young talent. The Volunteers did add pieces to the offensive line, including LSU transfer Ory Williams and West Virginia's Donovan Haslam, and brought in running back Javin Gordon from Tulane.
