SEC Evening Report: Remembering a Legend, Tourney Action Heats Up

LEAD STORY: College Football World Mourns Passing of Legendary Coach Lou Holtz

The world of college football lost one of its most iconic and quotable figures Wednesday with the passing of Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz at age 89. Holtz, whose career spanned five decades, left an indelible mark on the sport and on two Southeastern Conference programs, the University of Arkansas and the University of South Carolina. His overall college coaching record stands at a remarkable 249-132-7.

Holtz is most famously remembered for leading Notre Dame to a national championship in 1988, but his reputation as a master program-builder was earned across multiple stops. He is the only coach in history to lead six different programs to bowl games. That journey included seven seasons at Arkansas from 1977-1983, where he compiled a 60-21-2 record and led the Razorbacks to six consecutive bowl games. His first Razorback team capped the 1977 season with a stunning 31-6 upset of No. 2 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.

After a decorated tenure at Notre Dame, Holtz came out of retirement to take over a struggling South Carolina program in 1999. Following a difficult 0-11 first season, he engineered a historic turnaround, leading the Gamecocks to an 8-4 record and an Outback Bowl victory in 2000, earning National Coach of the Year honors. He would lead the Gamecocks to another Outback Bowl win the following season, finishing his time in Columbia with a 33-37 record and a restored sense of pride for the program.

QUICK HITS

  • Florida Dominates SEC Tourney Opener: The Florida Gators women's basketball team never trailed in an 86-68 wire-to-wire victory over Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Greenville, S.C. Me'Arah O’Neal and Liv McGill were a potent one-two punch, each scoring 22 points. O'Neal was particularly efficient, shooting 7-of-12 from the field. The win advances the Gators to a second-round matchup against Oklahoma on Thursday.

  • Kentucky Men Stumble at Texas A&M: A decisive second-half run by Texas A&M doomed the Kentucky Wildcats on the road, as they fell to the Aggies 96-85 in College Station. The Wildcats built a double-digit lead in the first half before the Aggies stormed back. Otega Oweh paced Kentucky with 24 points in the loss, while Mouhamed Dioubate added 19. Rylan Griffen led Texas A&M with 21 points off the bench.

  • Tough Love Fuels Kentucky's Strack: An intense motivational tactic from Kentucky women's basketball coach Kenny Brooks appears to have unlocked a new level for center Clara Strack. After a sloppy performance against Auburn, Brooks challenged his star, telling her, “You are the worst superstar I’ve ever coached.” The tough talk worked. Strack responded with a 24-point, 9-rebound effort against No. 3 South Carolina and followed it up with a dominant 20-point, 13-rebound performance in just 22 minutes during Kentucky's 93-63 SEC Tournament win over Arkansas.

  • Mississippi State Football Adds Veteran Coach: Head coach Jeff Lebby has hired Philip Montgomery to serve as Mississippi State's Associate Head Coach for Offense and Wide Receivers Coach. Montgomery, a former Broyles Award finalist, brings a wealth of experience as a former head coach at Tulsa and an offensive coordinator at Auburn, Virginia Tech, and Baylor, where he previously worked with Lebby.

  • Alabama Swimming Sends 10 to NCAAs: The Alabama Crimson Tide will be well-represented at the upcoming NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, with the program officially sending 10 swimmers to the national meet. The Tide qualified six individuals across 10 different events and will also compete in all five relay events. Alabama may add to that number with the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships still to come.
