LEAD STORY: Nyck Harbor Presents a Major Test for Kentucky's Secondary
South Carolina wide receiver Nyck Harbor is a hard matchup for any defense, and Kentucky's secondary faces him on Saturday. At 6-foot-5, Harbor is taller than nearly every cornerback who lines up across from him. His bigger advantage is speed. According to the RSS Aggregator report, NFL scouts estimate he could run a sub-4.3 40-yard dash, based on his 10.2 time in the 100-yard dash.
The timing is bad for the Wildcats. Opposing receivers have found room against Kentucky all season:
- Youngstown State's Lynn Wyche-El: 7 receptions, 111 yards, 1 TD
- Alabama's Ryan Williams, Rico Scott and Lotzeir Brooks (combined): 12 receptions, 141 yards, 1 TD
- Texas A&M's Mario Carver: 11 receptions, 119 yards
- South Alabama's Jeremiah Jones-Thomas: 6 receptions, 91 yards, 1 TD
Harbor's best career game came against Clemson in last season's finale, when he caught 6 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Given how Kentucky has defended receivers so far, a similar line is realistic. The Wildcats have survived on takeaways. They rank in the top 15 nationally in interceptions and turnover margin, but they have allowed nearly 5 yards per play, according to NCAA stats. If Kentucky can't tighten its coverage on the back end, a Gamecocks offense with a deep threat like Harbor could make Saturday a long afternoon.
