LEAD STORY: Kentucky Builds Its Fence Higher
Kentucky baseball landed the top prospect in the state for the fourth straight recruiting cycle this week, as Owensboro Catholic right-hander Jaxson White — the No. 1 player in Kentucky's 2028 class — committed to the Wildcats. It is the latest evidence that Lexington has become the default destination for the commonwealth's best diamond talent, not a school that has to fight Louisville or out-of-state programs for it.
White's arsenal is already advanced. He works with a heavy 92-96 mph fastball, a sharp slider with real break that still needs control refinement, and a changeup that freezes hitters sitting on the heater. His curveball is the pitch to watch developing — the natural break out of his hand is tremendous. At the Prep Games Future Games, where the nation's top uncommitted players are invited, White was graded as a "loose athletic arm with whip."
The pattern behind the commitment matters as much as the arm. Kentucky landed Owen Jenkins, the consensus No. 1 player in the state for 2025, though his stay was brief — Jenkins started 38 games between catcher and designated hitter in 2026, slashing .242/.302/.315, before transferring to Texas Tech. The Wildcats reloaded anyway, signing Trinity High School's Grayson Willoughby out of the 2026 class, a top-35 national recruit per Perfect Game who has touched 97-plus. For 2027, Beechwood outfielder Tyler Fryman — the state's top prospect — also picked Kentucky. In a conference that sent 12 teams to NCAA Regionals last year, including seven hosts, that kind of homegrown pipeline is the cheapest sustainable advantage a program can build.

Arch Manning makes the Davey O'Brien watch list. The Texas redshirt junior quarterback was named to the award's preseason watch list, per the Davey O'Brien Foundation. Manning earned a spot on the O'Brien Postseason Great 8 list after Texas beat Michigan in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
LSU falls at home. No. 21 LSU dropped a 2-1 decision to UCF, ending a home non-conference unbeaten run that dated to 2024.
PORTAL WATCH
Ole Miss added to its defensive front, with Zxavian Harris committing to the Rebels. Harris is the lone portal move on the board over the last 12 hours, and it comes at a point on the calendar when additions are about depth and immediate camp reps rather than reshaping a two-deep.
RECRUITING BUZZ
Beyond White's pledge to Kentucky, Missouri basketball has its fall visit calendar set. Dennis Gates already holds a commitment from Scottie Adkinson, and three more targets have locked in dates. Cameron Barnes, a 6-7 forward from the Lee's Summit area and the No. 113 player in the 247Sports composite, visits September 19 for the Troy game. Tyran Frazier — the No. 40 overall prospect and No. 6 center, a St. Louis native now at Principia — visits that same weekend, with West Virginia and Virginia Tech also on his list. Devin Cleveland, the No. 34 prospect in the 2027 class and the No. 8 combo guard, comes to Columbia October 3 for the Florida game, with Alabama, TCU and Michigan also scheduled. Adkinson plans to be in town for Cleveland's visit.
Elsewhere on the trail, Jaxon Kohler committed to BYU after being pursued by Kentucky.
GAMES TO WATCH
No games are scheduled today. The weekend picks up Sunday, when LSU returns to Baton Rouge to host FGCU at 1 p.m. as the Tigers (1-2-0) look to steady themselves after the UCF loss.
