LEAD STORY: Tennessee's QB Competition Headlines Day One in Tampa
SEC Media Days opened Monday in Tampa with Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Kentucky taking the podium — and no storyline drew more attention than the quarterback competition in Knoxville. Tennessee will start its fifth different quarterback in five years in 2026, with redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon battling for the job in preseason camp.
MacIntyre brings a year in the system, having appeared in 18 snaps over two games last season after arriving as the No. 151 overall player and No. 13 quarterback in the 247Sports Composite. Brandon carries bigger billing — the 6'4, 225-pounder was the No. 10 overall prospect and No. 3 quarterback in the 2026 class. "I think that guy, like everybody else, has to earn it in front of their peers," Tennessee's head coach said, noting the Volunteers have started a different quarterback in seven of the last nine years while finishing top 10 nationally in scoring in each of those seasons.
Whoever wins the job inherits a strong supporting cast. Running back DeSean Bishop, a second-team All-SEC pick after rushing for 1,076 yards and 16 touchdowns on 182 carries, returns to anchor the ground game, along with receivers Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley and tight end Ethan Davis. The runway is short, though: Texas visits Knoxville on Sept. 26 after a compact non-conference slate that includes a trip to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech. "The beauty of the game with your quarterback is each one of 'em's a little bit different," the Vols' head coach added. "They're the artist. You have to hand them the paintbrush and let them go paint it."

- Kentucky's in-state pipeline is surging. The Wildcats' first-year head coach told reporters in Tampa that Kentucky high school football "is as good as I've ever seen," with four or five in-state players already committed to the Wildcats and an estimated 15 Division I prospects in the state this cycle — with more coming in the 2027 and 2028 classes.
- John Mateer wants another shot at Texas. The Oklahoma quarterback, who played through a 23-6 loss to the Longhorns last season just 17 days after undergoing surgery, told media he's "looking forward to another opportunity" against the rival, per 247Sports. "I'm not going to sit here and make an excuse. We lost. I lost."
- Mixed injury news at Missouri. Right tackle Josh Atkins, an Arizona State transfer, will be out longer than expected after a setback in rehab, with Luke Work, Logan Reichert, and Jack Lange candidates to fill in. Running back Ahmad Hardy has been medically cleared with a 5-8 week timetable that could put him back in the lineup early in the regular season, which opens Sept. 3 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Kicker Blake Craig is fully recovered from his torn ACL, and Florida State transfer Brunno Reus will handle kickoffs.
- Texas is betting on youth. The Longhorns own the fourth-youngest roster in FBS at an average age of 19.86 years, according to RotoWire — and Georgia holds the youngest in the country at 19.81, proof that a blue-chip youth movement can coexist with winning at the highest level.
- Georgia track and field cleaned up in the classroom. The Bulldogs earned USTFCCCA National Scholar Team of the Year honors, with numerous Georgia student-athletes collecting individual All-Academic recognition.
PORTAL WATCH
A quiet 12 hours on the transfer front with no new portal entries or commitments to report. One roster addition of note outside the portal: Missouri women's tennis signed Romanian 19-year-old Alexandra-Irina Anghel for the 2026-27 season. Her career-high WTA doubles ranking of No. 530 is the highest of any player on the Tigers' roster, and she arrives with four ITF junior titles and full freshman eligibility.
RECRUITING BUZZ
No new commitments in the last 12 hours, but keep an eye on Kentucky. With four or five in-state prospects already pledged to the Wildcats and the 2027 and 2028 classes trending upward, holding the state line will be a defining test for the new staff in Lexington.
GAMES TO WATCH
No SEC games are on the schedule today, but Wednesday brings a winner-take-all Game 3 between The Ville and La Familia at 6 p.m. ET inside Memorial Coliseum in Lexington. The Ville evened the alumni series with an 82-62 rout Monday at Freedom Hall behind Montrezl Harrell's 35 points, outrebounding La Familia 43-30 while holding them to 33.9% shooting. SEC Media Days also continue in Tampa, where the rest of the league's programs will take the podium throughout the week.
