SEC Football Preview: Florida Gators at Texas Longhorns

SEC Football Preview: Florida Gators at Texas Longhorns
Teams: Florida Florida Texas Texas

Matchup Overview

No. 16 Florida goes to Austin on Thursday, Oct. 15, to face the top-ranked Texas Longhorns at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Both teams need this one, for different reasons.

Texas comes in at 4-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play. The Longhorns hold the No. 1 ranking, but with a split in conference games they have no room for error in the league standings. A home win over a ranked opponent would protect their spot at the top of the polls and get them back on track in the SEC race.

Florida is 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC. A win over the nation's No. 1 team on the road would be the best result of the Gators' season and would push them back into the upper half of a crowded conference. A loss would drop Florida to a losing SEC record halfway through the season.

The Gators also won the last meeting. Florida beat Texas 29-21 on October 3, 2025. Texas now gets the rematch on its own field.

Keys to the Game

Florida Gators

Get Aaron Philo going early. Philo averages 223.5 yards per game, the most on Florida's roster. On the road against the No. 1 team, the Gators need Philo producing at or above that average to stay in the game.

Lean on a balanced attack. Florida has two other players producing at a high rate. Alec Clark averages 128.2 yards per game and Jadan Baugh averages 112. When all three produce, Florida has more than 460 yards per game of individual output to work with. Spreading the ball among Philo, Clark and Baugh makes the Gators harder to defend.

Keep Baugh involved. Baugh's 112 yards per game give Florida a reliable third option. If he stays near that number, Texas can't focus its defense on Philo and Clark alone.

Texas Longhorns

Let Arch Manning set the tone. Manning leads Texas at 225 yards per game, the highest average of any player in this matchup. If he controls the game early at home, Texas can dictate the pace.

Keep Mac Chiumento central. Chiumento averages 215.8 yards per game. That gives Texas a second high-volume producer, and no Florida player outside Philo comes close to that number. Texas has two players above 215 yards per game, and that depth at the top is its biggest edge on paper.

Get production from CJ Baxter. Baxter averages 80.7 yards per game. That is the lowest of the six featured players, but it still matters. If Baxter is at or above his average, Florida can't load up against Manning and Chiumento.

Key Matchups

Aaron Philo vs. Arch Manning. The two leading producers are separated by 1.5 yards per game: Manning averages 225 and Philo 223.5. Whoever beats his average Thursday likely gives his team the edge. Manning has the benefit of playing at home.

Mac Chiumento vs. Alec Clark. Each team's second-leading producer is a key piece. Chiumento's 215.8 yards per game is 87.6 more than Clark's 128.2. Florida needs Clark to cut into that gap, or Texas wins this matchup by a wide margin.

Jadan Baugh vs. CJ Baxter. Florida has the edge among the third options. Baugh averages 112 yards per game to Baxter's 80.7, a gap of 31.3 yards. If the top two pairings end up close, this one could decide the game.

Total output. Texas's three featured players combine for 521.5 yards per game. Florida's three combine for 463.7. That gap of nearly 58 yards per game is the main statistical hurdle for the Gators.

Players to Watch

Florida: Aaron Philo — 223.5 YDS/game Philo is Florida's top producer and the main reason the Gators can match the Longhorns' top end. With Clark (128.2) and Baugh (112) behind him, Philo's performance will likely decide how competitive Florida is in Austin.

Texas: Arch Manning — 225 YDS/game Manning leads every player in this game in yards per game. With Chiumento (215.8) also producing at a high level, Texas has two players who can carry the offense. Manning is the one most likely to control the game.

Prediction

The numbers favor Texas, mainly because of its depth at the top. Manning and Chiumento both average more than 215 yards per game. Florida has only one player, Philo, in that range. Clark's 128.2 yards per game is the gap the Gators most need to close.

Florida has a real path to an upset. Philo's 223.5 yards per game nearly matches Manning, and Baugh's edge over Baxter gives the Gators an advantage among the third options. Florida also won the last meeting, 29-21.

At home, though, Texas's two high-volume producers should be the difference. If Manning hits his average and Chiumento stays near his, Florida will struggle to keep pace for four quarters.

Prediction: Texas 31, Florida 24
