LEAD STORY: Mizzou Welcomes the SEC's Best to Columbia

Championship cross country season arrives in Mid-Missouri on Friday as Missouri hosts the 2026 SEC Cross Country Championships at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia — just the second time the Tigers have hosted the meet since joining the league, following their inaugural turn in 2021. The women's 6,000-meter race goes off at 10:08 a.m. CT, with the men's 8,000-meter race following at 10:45 a.m. CT. SEC Network carries live coverage beginning at 10 a.m. CT, and with Mizzou students admitted free, the Tigers expect a loud home crowd lining the course.

The field is loaded. The women's 16-team race features five top-30 programs, headlined by the No. 4-ranked Florida Gators, while four of the 14 men's squads hold top-30 rankings — three of them inside the national top 10. Missouri was picked fifth on the women's side and seventh on the men's side in the SEC preseason coaches' poll, but the Tigers believe course familiarity closes that gap. "Being here at Gans at home, it's a course that I've run for the past six to eight years or so," veteran Tyler Freiner said. "We don't have to travel this year, which is really nice... You're sleeping better and the extra motivation of let's show up on our own course." Missouri's head distance coach framed the stakes bluntly: "It'll be a game of inches for first to sixth on the men's side."

The Tigers arrive with momentum from the Nuttycombe Invitational, where the women placed ninth overall — ahead of No. 5 Iowa State and No. 11 Northwestern — and the men took 31st, finishing ahead of Oklahoma. Monica Wanjiku led Mizzou's women in 20th at 19:43.5, with Kobi Walker 35th at 20:04.4. On the men's side, Jean Kipchumba made his Mizzou debut in 86th at 23:48.9, with Elijah Limo close behind in 96th at 23:54.8. Freiner, roughly 50th at last year's SEC meet, is targeting top-30 finishes at both SECs and regionals this time around.
