Lead Story: Mitchell's Attorneys Take Aim at the SEC's New Eligibility Policy
The legal fight over Mark Mitchell's availability at Kentucky took a sharper turn Thursday. According to Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger, Mitchell's attorneys have amended their complaint in the Kentucky eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA, asking a judge to hold the NCAA in contempt of court for allowing the SEC to issue a new policy that affects the eligibility of 13 athletes — Mitchell, the Missouri-to-Kentucky transfer, among them.
The amended filing widens the target. Attorney Ryan Downton told Yahoo Sports that the players believe the SEC's new policy and its "draconian penalties" interfere with their "constitutional right to have access to the court system," because the sanctions attached to it may keep schools from accepting those players onto rosters at all. That is the pressure point: it is not only whether Mitchell is ruled eligible, but whether a program would risk the penalty of adding him even if he were.
What the filing does not make clear is which rule is actually in the crosshairs. The SEC's intraconference transfer rule would bar Mitchell from moving from Missouri to another SEC program unless he entered the spring transfer portal window, and the conference's new framework governing professionals returning to school is a separate question entirely. The amended complaint could be reaching for either — or both. Mitchell was still in a Missouri uniform on Feb. 28, 2026, posting up against Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum. Whether he wears Kentucky blue this season is now a courtroom question, and with more than two months until the college basketball season tips off, there is at least time on the calendar for an answer.
Quick Hits
Vanderbilt sets its Week 1 quarterback. Senior Blaze Berlowitz will start the Commodores' season opener against Austin Peay, a decision Vanderbilt's staff described Thursday as what's "best" for the offense. It ends the summer's most-watched position battle in Nashville before the first snap of the year.
Tennessee's backcourt is nearly whole. Guards Tyler Lundblade and Troy Henderson are both closing in on full strength. Lundblade, the Volunteers' first transfer portal addition, has been sidelined by a back injury; the 6-5 shooting guard shot 43 percent from three at Belmont last season, scored over 15 points per game and was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Henderson, a returning sophomore who appeared in 28 games, is working back from a shoulder issue that dates to last season. "If you watch him work out, he's out there full throttle, full head of steam, hadn't really done anything direct contact yet, but he'll be out there very, very soon," Tennessee assistant Amarrow Morrow said. Both will factor into a rotation that also includes Dai Dai Ames, Juke Harris and Terrance Hill, with October scrimmages against Xavier and Duke on deck.
ACC expands enhanced replay for 2026. Per ESPN, the ACC will significantly increase the number of games in which viewers get an inside look at the full discussions and debates inside the conference's replay center in Charlotte, North Carolina — a transparency model SEC fans will inevitably measure their own league against this fall.
Auburn's Chloe Taylor is on the world stage. The freshman is 5,000 miles from her teammates, representing Canada at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland while the Tigers work through nonconference play without her.
Around the league. LSU placed 17 gymnasts on the 2026 WCGA Scholastic All-America Team. Mississippi State landed two players in the ITA preseason rankings released Aug. 25 for the 2026-27 season. And at Georgia, a lengthy list of former Bulldogs is in the final stages of preparing for professional basketball seasons across the United States, Europe, Asia and South America.
Portal Watch
No transfer portal activity to report over the last 12 hours. The quiet is seasonal — football rosters are locked in for openers, and basketball's movement has given way to eligibility questions like Mitchell's, where the decisions are being made by judges and compliance offices rather than by players choosing a school.
Recruiting Buzz
No new commitments in the last 12 hours.
Games to Watch
Nothing on the SEC slate today, but Friday brings the first competition of the weekend. No. 22 Tennessee volleyball opens the 2026 season by hosting the Tennessee Tournament from Aug. 28-30 at Food City Center, welcoming Colgate, Fairfield and Morehead State to Rocky Top.
Vanderbilt's opener against Austin Peay now has a confirmed quarterback in Berlowitz. And looking further ahead, Texas women's basketball has scheduled the Lone Star Series in Fort Worth, where the Longhorns will face Ohio State and TCU at Dickies Arena.
