LEAD STORY: Mark Mitchell's Fifth Season Back in Question
Missouri basketball's eligibility fight got harder on Friday. According to CBS Sports, a Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved the temporary injunction that had allowed Missouri star Mark Mitchell and several other well-known college basketball players to pursue a fifth season of competition. That injunction was the legal basis for their eligibility. With it gone, the players are in limbo just as preseason preparations ramp up across the country.
The Tigers have the most at stake here in the SEC. Mitchell's status matters a great deal to Missouri's plans, and the ruling adds uncertainty at a time when rosters are supposed to be settled. CBS Sports noted that the case "got more complicated" with Friday's decision. It is not yet clear what legal options remain for the affected players.
The ruling is part of a wider debate over eligibility rules in college athletics. That debate has played out in courtrooms as often as on the court. Missouri fans, and fans of every program counting on a fifth-year contributor, will be watching for the next filing.
