LEAD STORY: The SEC's Basketball Gauntlet Comes Into Focus
Monday belonged to the hardwood. The SEC released its 2026-27 conference schedule, and Missouri, LSU and Ole Miss all pushed out complete slates within hours of one another. Under the 16-team format, every school plays the other 15 once and three opponents twice — two permanent partners plus one rotating draw.
Missouri's reveal was the loudest of the three. The Tigers' 31-game regular season includes 12 games against teams in ESPN's Way-Too-Early Top 25, 15 against 2026 NCAA Tournament teams and 17 dates inside Mizzou Arena. Missouri, ranked No. 21 in that preseason poll, opens league play Jan. 2 at Arkansas — an immediate rematch of last season's regular-season finale, an 88-84 overtime loss, and the first time since joining the SEC in 2012-13 that the Tigers begin conference play against the Razorbacks. Texas A&M and Kentucky follow at home before a midweek trip to Tennessee. Arkansas, Oklahoma and Tennessee are the double-play opponents. The bye falls Feb. 7, and four of the final six games are away from Columbia before a March 6 home finale against LSU. The non-conference build is just as demanding: an opener against Cleveland State, neutral-site games against Marquette in Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska in Kansas City, Illinois and SLU in St. Louis, plus a true road test at Indiana on Dec. 18.
LSU countered with 32 regular-season games and three exhibitions, taking full advantage of the new NCAA rule permitting up to three exhibition dates against fellow Division I teams. The Tigers host 2026 NCAA Tournament teams Queens, Hofstra and High Point, travel to Gonzaga and Houston, and open the regular season Nov. 3 at home before starting SEC play Jan. 2 against South Carolina. Their Acrisure Series opponents in late November remain unset. Ole Miss, meanwhile, drew Kentucky, Auburn and Mississippi State twice and faces the ugliest opening stretch in the league: a home date with Georgia on Jan. 2 followed by three straight road trips to Kentucky, Alabama and Auburn. Coming off a sub-.500 campaign, a 1-3 start would qualify as the best-case scenario. The backdrop for all of it: the SEC has produced more NCAA Tournament bids than any conference over the past two seasons — 14 in 2025 and 10 in 2026 — and eight league programs sit in ESPN's preseason top 25, led by Florida at No. 1.

- Media picks Ole Miss third. The preseason SEC football media poll has Georgia first at 2,519 points, Texas second at 2,449 and Ole Miss third at 2,004, narrowly ahead of Texas A&M (1,967), LSU (1,961) and Alabama (1,930). Arkansas was picked last at 262.
- Rebels stack the All-SEC teams. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy earned first-team offensive honors, with defensive lineman Will Echoles also a first-team pick. Linebacker Suntarine Perkins (second team), kicker Lucas Carneiro (second team), offensive lineman Patrick Kutas (third team) and defensive lineman Kam Franklin (third team) rounded out the Ole Miss haul.
- Vanderbilt's quarterback question. With Diego Pavia gone — he left holding Vanderbilt's single-season passing marks for yards (3,539) and touchdowns (29), plus 1,663 rushing yards and 5,382 career passing yards — the job comes down to true freshman Jared Curtis and Blaze Berlowitz. Curtis, the highest-rated recruit in program history, threw for 9,738 yards and 128 touchdowns in high school. Berlowitz has thrown just 17 passes in an SEC season.
- Two Mizzou wrestling legends retire. Keegan O'Toole, a two-time NCAA champion, five-time All-American and U20 and U23 world champion, announced his retirement from competition after RAF 11 and will remain on the Missouri staff. Ben Askren also stepped away — Mizzou's first two-time NCAA champion (2006, 2007), a four-time All-American and two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner.
- Florida doubleheader of note. Gators volleyball opens 2026 with the inaugural "Gators vs. Gator Greats" match on Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. ET in the O'Connell Center, with nine alumni returning. On the links, rising junior Balma Dávalos Guaita posted a top-10 finish at the European Ladies Amateur Championship in Sweden. Auburn also added a former Tiger throws great to its track and field staff.
PORTAL WATCH
Nothing new to report. Zero SEC-relevant portal entries or commitments crossed the wire in the last 12 hours, which tracks for late July — rosters are effectively locked for fall camp, and the next meaningful wave won't arrive until the season is underway.
RECRUITING BUZZ
Ten commitments landed across the conference. Texas claimed the headliner in five-star John Meredith III. Missouri was the busiest, adding four-star DJ Jones alongside three-stars Trashundon Neal and Preston Hatfield. Alabama pulled a pair of four-stars in Jared Graham and Mhari Johnson, while Tennessee landed four-star Breeze Carter and three-star Jeremy George-El. Texas A&M added four-star Qui Beck, and Arkansas picked up three-star Jakore Smith.
GAMES TO WATCH
No games on Monday's slate. The next live competition on the SEC calendar is Florida volleyball's alumni match on Aug. 16. Vanderbilt sits roughly 40 days from opening the 2026 football season against Austin Peay, LSU basketball tips Nov. 3, and SEC hoops play begins league-wide on Jan. 2.
