Mizzou Claims Series in Fog-Shrouded Spectacle
A weekend series that began with a nearly three-hour rain delay ended in a bizarre, fog-induced controversy and ultimately a walk-off win for Missouri, as the Tigers took the marathon opening game 8-7 over Vanderbilt in 10 innings. The contest, which was suspended late Friday night due to dangerously dense fog, resumed Saturday afternoon and set the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
The controversy centered on a ninth-inning blast from Vanderbilt's Braden Holcomb. With two outs and the Commodores having just tied the game 7-7, Holcomb drove a ball deep into a thick fog bank in right-center field. Trackman data registered the hit at 108 mph with a projected distance of 379 feet, but the Mizzou outfielders lost sight of it, leading umpires to rule it a ground-rule double after a lengthy review. The decision only scored the tying run, preventing Vanderbilt from taking the lead. Play was suspended shortly after. When the game resumed Saturday, Missouri escaped the jam and eventually won in the 10th on a walk-off RBI single from Donovan Jordan—the same right fielder whose view was obscured on the contentious play.
"I didn’t see anything," Jordan said of the foggy ninth-inning play. "All I remember is hearing something hit the ground, looking around and I didn’t see any ball on the field." Mizzou coach Kerrick Jackson added, "Not much, it was foggy. I find it difficult to believe that at the launch angle, and where he hit it in the park with heavy air that the ball actually got out." Vanderbilt rebounded to win the second game of the series 11-8 in 11 innings, splitting the two contests played on Saturday.
