LSU turned its SEC matchup with Texas A&M into a rout on Saturday, beating the Aggies 35-6 at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers evened their conference record at 1-1. The Aggies fell to 0-2 in SEC play, and after a loss this lopsided, their margin for error in the league race is getting thin.
The gap between the two offenses defined the night. Both teams moved the ball, but only LSU turned yardage into touchdowns. Here are three takeaways from Baton Rouge.
1. Sam Leavitt and Jackson Harris Gave LSU the Balance It Needed
Sam Leavitt led LSU's offense with 312 yards. His production kept Texas A&M's defense on its heels all night. When the quarterback spot produces at that level, the rest of the offense opens up, and LSU took full advantage.
Jackson Harris was the finisher, scoring two touchdowns. In a game LSU controlled by 29 points, Harris was the player who turned drives into points. LSU needs that kind of red-zone reliability as it heads into the heart of its SEC schedule. Moving the ball between the 20s is one thing. Consistently scoring touchdowns is what separates contenders from the middle of the pack.
Scott Starzyk added 5 points, completing an efficient scoring performance. The defense also helped: Princewill Umanmielen recorded a sack and helped keep the Aggies from ever getting on track. LSU's 35 points against an SEC opponent showed what this offense can do when everything is working.
2. Texas A&M's Yardage Didn't Become Points
This is the most troubling part of the loss for Texas A&M. Tyler White piled up 363 yards, more than Leavitt produced for LSU. Even so, the Aggies scored only six points.
David Olano accounted for every one of those points. That means the offense repeatedly moved into scoring position and came away with little or nothing. A 363-yard performance should keep a team in most SEC games. Instead, Texas A&M lost by four touchdowns and was never competitive on the scoreboard.
The Aggies have to fix this before the season gets away from them. Stalled drives, missed chances in the red zone and settling for field-goal attempts get punished in SEC play, especially on the road in a hostile environment like Tiger Stadium. Moving the ball is clearly not the problem for Texas A&M. Finishing drives is. Until the Aggies turn those long possessions into touchdowns, numbers like White's won't mean much.
3. The SEC Standings Are Splitting Into Tiers
This result has real consequences in the conference race. LSU improves to 1-1 in SEC play and joins a crowded middle group with Kentucky, Ole Miss and Auburn, all also 1-1. Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi State lead the league at 2-0, and Texas is 1-0. For LSU, a convincing home win keeps it in the chase, but with one conference loss already, there is little room for another slip if the Tigers want to stay in contention for the SEC title game and a College Football Playoff berth.
For Texas A&M, 0-2 is a tough position. The Aggies are tied with South Carolina at the bottom of the standings in conference losses. They are already two games behind the four unbeaten league leaders, and several teams with more favorable records sit between them and the top. A conference title push now depends on a long winning streak, and the Aggies will likely need help from elsewhere to get back into the race.
The bigger issue for Texas A&M is postseason eligibility and momentum. A 29-point loss can wear on a team, and the Aggies have to regroup quickly. The raw talent is there, as White's 363 yards showed. Whether Texas A&M can turn that talent into points will decide what its season looks like. LSU, meanwhile, leaves Tiger Stadium with confidence and an offense that looks capable of keeping pace with anyone in the SEC's upper tier.
