SEC Morning Report: LSU Baseball Lands a Draft-Eve Stunner as Two-Way Star Lucas Nawrocki Commits to Campus

LEAD STORY: Nawrocki Says No to the MLB Draft, Yes to LSU

Less than 24 hours before the 2026 MLB Draft kicks off, two-way standout Lucas Nawrocki announced he is withdrawing from draft consideration and heading to LSU. "See y'all in the Boot. Let's work," the Texas prep star posted Friday, ending speculation that he was Major League-bound and delivering the Tigers one of the biggest roster wins of an already loaded offseason.

The rankings explain why Baton Rouge is celebrating. ESPN slotted Nawrocki at No. 91 overall and MLB.com at No. 153, while Prep Baseball Report ranks him No. 46 among graduating seniors nationally, No. 7 in Texas as a left-handed pitcher, and the No. 1 outfielder in the state. On the mound, the 5'11", 197-pound lefty brings a 95 mph fastball and a 3,200 rpm slider that MLB.com suggested might have been the best slider in the entire draft class, all from a deceptive three-quarters arm slot. At the plate, he hit .421 with a 1.236 OPS, 9 home runs, and 15 doubles while leading Aledo to the Texas 5A state championship, earning 2026 Texas Co-Player of the Year honors and turning heads at the MLB Combine with multiple 109 mph exit velocities on a wooden bat.

With LSU's 2027 lineup projected to be stacked in the field, Nawrocki's clearest early path to innings is on the mound, where the Tigers' confirmed left-handers currently number just three: Cooper Williams, Danny Lachenmayer, and Ethan Plog. Fellow lefty Braxton Beaty has also announced he will withdraw from the draft and enroll, while Santiago Garcia remains considered a heavy draft risk. LSU will be watching closely when the draft begins at noon Central on Sunday.

QUICK HITS

  • Tennessee's updated roster reveals big changes. The Volunteers released their official 2026 roster Friday with notable number swaps — QB George MacIntyre moves to No. 12, WR Tristen Keys takes No. 5, and freshman QB Faizon Brandon will wear No. 11. The weight column tells its own story: EDGE Christian Gass is up to 245 pounds (a gain of nearly 30), MacIntyre added roughly 15 pounds to reach 208, TE DaShaan Brame sits at 240, and RB DeSean Bishop is at 215 ahead of what should be a massive role.

  • Georgia's pass rush is the position group to watch in Athens. After finishing last in sacks a season ago, the Bulldogs' edge room is long on potential and short on proven production. Quintavius Johnson, a converted quarterback entering year three, is expected to step up as the primary threat, Gabe Harris returns after starting last season, and Rutgers flip Chase Linton has consistently drawn breakout buzz since spring practice.

  • John Wall reflects on his Kentucky roots. Appearing on The Assist with 247Sports' Kyle Tucker, the former Wildcats star — now a President of Basketball Operations — spoke about his lasting bond with the university and its fans, recalling his surprise appearance at Midnight Madness this past year. Wall led Kentucky to the Elite Eight in 2009-10, earned SEC Player of the Year honors, and went No. 1 overall in the 2010 NBA Draft.

  • Missouri's player-review series turns to Jacob Crews. The 6'7" wing shot 43.4% from three on the season — a top-40 mark nationally among shooters with 100-plus attempts — but cooled to 32.7% in SEC play as the Tigers shifted toward a defense-first identity late in the year. Rock M Nation remembers him fondly for big moments, including a 9-of-10 night at the free-throw line to seal a win over Florida.

  • LSU is exploring a new financial future. Per a report from Matt Moscona, LSU's top 40 donors have been invited to the Governor's Mansion on August 3 or 5, where university President Dr. Wade Rousse will present an "alternative revenue generating opportunity" for the athletic department as program values continue to climb in the NIL era.

PORTAL WATCH

No new transfer portal activity crossed the wire in the last 12 hours. One note from Austin: UCLA transfer outfielder Payton Brennan's commitment to Texas baseball continues to draw attention as the Longhorns build out their 2027 roster.

RECRUITING BUZZ

Texas basketball landed the headliner of the week: five-star forward Marcus Spears Jr. reclassified from 2027 to 2026 and committed to the Longhorns. Rivals ranks Spears Jr. as its No. 10 overall prospect, No. 2 power forward, and the No. 1 player in Texas, and his pledge vaulted the Longhorns' class to No. 6 nationally in the latest Rivals Industry Ranking. 247Sports argues the addition makes Texas a Final Four contender in 2026-27. Elsewhere, Ole Miss beat out Florida State and Alabama for a three-star tight end commit, and Alabama picked up a pledge from an elite in-state 2028 quarterback.

GAMES TO WATCH

No SEC games are scheduled today. The event circled on every calendar in Baton Rouge, Austin, and beyond: the 2026 MLB Draft begins Sunday at noon Central, where draft decisions will finalize rosters across SEC baseball.
