SEC Morning Report: Kentucky's Special Teams Sealed the Upset of No. 9 Texas A&M

LEAD STORY: Kentucky Won All Three Phases in College Station

Kentucky's upset of No. 9 Texas A&M at Kyle Field has drawn plenty of attention for what the Wildcats' offense and defense did on Saturday, but the third phase deserves equal billing. Kentucky's special teams unit repeatedly tilted field position and closed the door when the Aggies threatened to make it a game.

Place kicker Adam Zouagui, a USF transfer, missed an early second-quarter field goal that would have given Kentucky the lead. He answered when it mattered. Zouagui banked a 52-yard field goal off the upright with 8:22 remaining to push the Wildcats ahead 31-14, a three-score cushion that let the Kentucky sideline exhale. After Texas A&M pulled within 31-21, punter Thomas O'Hara delivered the other signature play of the night, pinning the Aggies at their own 5-yard line from midfield. O'Hara had struggled to flip the field against Alabama a week earlier; in crunch time against Texas A&M, he changed the math on the Aggies' comeback attempt.

The unit came within inches of two more takeaways. Kentucky's kickoff coverage knocked the ball loose from the Texas A&M returner on the game's opening play, only for replay to rule the runner down. Later, the punt team forced Aggies returner Mario Craver into a muff before Texas A&M recovered. Neither play went Kentucky's way on the scoreboard, but the pressure was constant, and in a first-year staff's opening SEC road test, the special teams gave the Wildcats margin for error the offense and defense didn't have to burn.

• Georgia braces for Oklahoma's first visit to Athens. The Bulldogs host the Sooners on Saturday for the first time in Sanford Stadium history, a matchup of two College Football Playoff participants returning their starting quarterbacks.
