SEC Evening Report: Kentucky Advances Major Entertainment District Plan Near Kroger Field

Kentucky Forges Ahead with Kroger Field Entertainment District

The University of Kentucky is moving forward with an ambitious plan to build a year-round entertainment district adjacent to Kroger Field. On Tuesday, university officials informed the Champions Blue LLC Board of Governors that they have selected the "Cooper Connector" proposal for the project. This plan will be anchored by dining and retail establishments and is slated to include a hotel conference center.

The development will necessitate significant changes to the area, most notably the removal of the Bluegrass Community and Technical College's original campus on Cooper Drive. A BCTC spokesperson confirmed the college will vacate the property by the end of 2026. The university had weighed four different proposals since February, ultimately choosing the one that reimagines the north side of the stadium.

Further decisions remain, including the precise location for the hotel and whether a new multi-use facility—potentially housing a new basketball practice facility—will be part of the Kroger Field district or developed near Memorial Coliseum. The project is part of a multi-year strategy to generate new revenue streams for UK Athletics and enhance the fan experience beyond football game days.
