SEC Evening Report: Jamal Crawford Passes on Kentucky as Wildcats Turn to Familiar Face

Lead Story: Crawford Says No to Lexington, Kentucky Pivots Internally

Kentucky's search to fill the open spot on Mark Pope's staff took a turn Thursday. Three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford confirmed to KSR that he will not join the Wildcats' bench, closing the book on a courtship that had generated real buzz around Big Blue Nation. "I can't do it right now. I just can't, not with everything," Crawford told KSR. "But I have no doubt I will be a coach in the future. Zero."

Crawford, whose two-decade playing career and current work in AAU circles and NBA broadcasting made him an intriguing candidate, reportedly weighed the offer seriously. "If this were a different time, there's no doubt. There's zero doubt," he said. For now, though, the timing didn't line up.

With the vacancy still open in mid-July, attention shifts to a candidate already inside the building. Per KSR's Ryan Lemond, Kentucky will "more than likely" promote Nick Robinson, currently the program's director of basketball operations. Robinson arrived in Lexington with Pope from BYU, where he spent five seasons on the Cougars' staff, and his existing familiarity with the operation makes him a logical fit this late in the offseason.
