LEAD STORY: Alabama Reels In Top-30 Guard Chase Lumpkin
Alabama basketball landed the first — and biggest — piece of its 2027 recruiting class Wednesday, as Chase Lumpkin, the No. 28 overall prospect in the class, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide in an interview with ESPN.
Lumpkin ranks among the top guards in the country, and his pledge gives Alabama an early anchor in Tuscaloosa at a position the Crimson Tide have leaned on heavily in recent recruiting cycles. Landing a top-30 national prospect this early in the cycle is the kind of momentum play that tends to pull other high-major targets into the conversation, and Alabama now has a headliner to build a class around rather than a board full of maybes.
For the SEC at large, it is another data point in an arms race that has turned the league into the most aggressive basketball recruiting conference in the country. Alabama has spent the last several cycles converting elite guard play into deep March runs, and Lumpkin fits the profile of the perimeter talent that has defined those teams. Per ESPN, the commitment came Wednesday, jump-starting a class that had not yet produced a pledge.

Schedules everywhere. The SEC released its 2027 conference softball schedule, Florida unveiled its 2027 gymnastics slate, Ole Miss revealed a rifle schedule that opens in late September, and Oklahoma rowing announced a three-regatta fall — one in October, two in November.
