3 Takeaways: Kentucky Wildcats Edges LSU Tigers 35-34
Teams: Kentucky Kentucky LSU LSU

Kentucky beat LSU 35-34 at Kroger Field on Saturday. A conference win by a single point lifts the Wildcats to 3-1 in SEC play and third place in the league standings. LSU falls to 1-2 in the conference and loses ground in a crowded middle of the SEC table. Neither team pulled away, and the gap at the end was one point. For Kentucky, the result keeps it near the top of the conference in October. For LSU, it was a game that could have gone either way, and it went the wrong way.

Takeaway 1: Kentucky's Balance Was Enough to Win a Shootout

Kentucky won by spreading the production around, with no single player carrying the game. Kenny Minchey led the Wildcats with 246 yards, and CJ Baxter scored twice. Baxter's two touchdowns account for 12 of Kentucky's 35 points, and in a one-point game every one of those scores mattered.

Adam Zouagui added 9 points. In a game decided by the smallest possible margin, those points were the difference. Kentucky needed every phase to contribute, and it got that.

The Wildcats' 3-1 SEC record now looks earned. Teams that win close conference games build belief, and Kentucky has now shown it can keep pace when the scoreboard turns into a track meet. The open question is whether it can win the same way against Alabama and Georgia, the two unbeaten teams above it.

Takeaway 2: LSU Got Big Production and Still Came Up Short

LSU scored 34 points on the road in the SEC and lost anyway. That will sting. Sam Leavitt put up 275 yards and two touchdowns, enough output to win most conference games. Scott Starzyk added 10 points, and the Tigers stayed in range of Kentucky all day.

The problem was the other side of the ball. Kentucky scored 35 points, and LSU's pass rush didn't do enough to change that. Malik Blocton recorded a sack, but the Tigers couldn't get the stop they needed to protect a lead or create one. Kentucky's Sam Greene, by contrast, had two sacks on his own, and that edge in the pass rush counted in a game this close.

For LSU, the lesson is that offensive production alone won't win games in the SEC. If the defense can't hold opponents under the mid-30s, the Tigers will keep needing perfect offensive games to win. At 1-2 in the league, LSU can't afford many more close losses, and the defense has to be the priority going forward.

Takeaway 3: Kentucky Moves Into the Chase, LSU Falls Toward the Bottom of the Table

The SEC standings show how much this game moved both teams. Kentucky is 3-1 and sits third, behind only Alabama (3-0) and Georgia (3-0). Its one conference loss means it now needs help to catch the unbeaten leaders. Still, Kentucky is ahead of a group of one-loss teams that includes Mississippi State (2-1), Missouri (2-1), Tennessee (2-1) and Ole Miss (2-1). Those teams have played fewer league games, so the Wildcats' position will be tested as the schedule evens out.

LSU's position is much more fragile. At 1-2, the Tigers are 14th in the conference, ahead of only Arkansas (0-3) and Vanderbilt (0-3). Several teams with similar records, including Texas (1-1), Oklahoma (1-1) and Auburn (1-2), are in the same group. That means LSU's climb back depends on winning head-to-head games with teams around it. Two conference losses this early leave little room for a third if the Tigers want to stay in the postseason conversation.

The gap between these two teams was one point on Saturday. In the standings, it now looks much wider. Kentucky has put itself in position to play meaningful November games. LSU has to win now to make sure its own November games still mean something.
