AUBURN, Ala. (11/04/2026) — Danielle Osho poured in a game-high 16 points and Jessica Peterson contributed a dominant 19-rebound performance as the Auburn Tigers opened their home slate with a 56-48 victory over the Southern Miss Lady Eagles on Wednesday night at Neville Arena.
How It Happened
Southern Miss drew first blood, with Kennedy Langham converting a layup at the 8:55 mark of the first quarter to push the Lady Eagles ahead 2-0. Auburn answered quickly — Jessica Peterson knotted it at 5-4 off a layup assisted by Osho at 7:20, and moments later Osho drained a 23-foot three-pointer, with Phoenix Stotijn drawing the assist, to push the Tigers in front 10-6.
Auburn then seized full control with a 9-0 run that stretched the advantage from 15-11 to 23-12, a sequence that proved to be the defining stretch of the contest. By the time Stotijn converted both ends of a free throw opportunity late in the opening quarter, Auburn led 16-11 and never again relinquished the lead. Sania Richardson added a layup at 0:51 of the first quarter to push it to 18-11 heading into the second period.
The Tigers built on that cushion in the second quarter. Peterson knocked down a 15-foot jumper off a Richardson assist to make it 20-11, then Osho delivered her second three-pointer of the night — this one from 27 feet with Ja'Mia Harris assisting — to extend it to 23-11. Auburn carried a 32-24 halftime advantage into the locker room.
Southern Miss refused to fold in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles chipped away methodically, with Chrysta Narcisse converting a Langham-assisted layup and later hitting free throws late in the period. The deficit narrowed to 40-38 with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter, setting up a tense final frame.
Turning Point
Auburn's 9-0 first-half run — turning a slim 15-11 margin into a commanding 23-12 lead — proved the decisive sequence. The Tigers forced Southern Miss into extended scoring droughts, and despite the Lady Eagles' third-quarter surge, Auburn never allowed them to erase the double-digit hole the run created. Peterson's opening layup of the fourth quarter at 9:39 pushed the lead back to 42-38 and effectively ended the Lady Eagles' momentum. Whitney Hart and Harris sealed it at the free throw line in the final minute.
Star of the Game
Danielle Osho was the catalyst on offense, finishing with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Her two three-pointers — from 23 and 27 feet, respectively — came at critical junctures in the first half and provided the Tigers with the separation they needed. But the night's most eye-catching line belonged to Jessica Peterson, who hauled down a remarkable 19 rebounds to go with 14 points and an assist. That kind of interior presence defined Auburn's physical advantage — the Tigers finished with 48 rebounds to Southern Miss's 40 — and made the difference in keeping the Lady Eagles at arm's length when they began to close the gap. Ja'Mia Harris rounded out Auburn's balanced attack with 14 points of her own.
For Southern Miss, Hayleigh Breland led the Lady Eagles with 14 points on a night they shot just 22 percent from the field. Langham added 13 points and was particularly active in the second half, while Jada Gay battled on the boards with 8 rebounds.
What It Means
For the Auburn Tigers, the win represents a solid home performance to start the season. Shooting 33 percent from the field leaves room for improvement, as does the 21 turnovers Auburn committed — but the Tigers compensated with a dominant rebounding margin and timely contributions from multiple players. The depth shown across Osho, Peterson, and Harris gives Auburn a foundation to build on as the schedule intensifies.
Southern Miss showed resilience in cutting what was a 20-point second-quarter deficit down to two in the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles' 22 percent shooting from the floor made sustained offensive pressure impossible to maintain. The 2,526 fans at Neville Arena saw an Auburn team that leaned on interior physicality and individual playmaking to secure a season-opening home victory.
