LEAD STORY: Protect College Sports Act Clears the Senate
Federal legislation that could reshape college athletics took a major step forward Monday night. The U.S. Senate voted 77-22 to pass the Protect College Sports Act, according to ESPN. The bill has bipartisan support and aims to stabilize an industry that has been in constant flux. Every SEC athletic department has been dealing with that instability.
"This bill puts an end to the chaos plaguing college athletics," Sen. Ted Cruz said after the vote, per ESPN.
The bill still has a long way to go before it becomes law. As CBS Sports notes, the Senate vote is only the first test, and uncertainty awaits in the House, where it has to clear more hurdles before it can be signed. For SEC schools, which operate at the top of the sport's financial structure, whatever version comes out of the House will matter a great deal. Monday's 77-22 margin shows strong support in one chamber, but it does not guarantee anything in the other.

LSU loses Whit Weeks to a fractured fibula. The Tigers' star linebacker got hurt in the third quarter of Saturday's game against Texas A&M in Baton Rouge. He left the stadium on a golf cart, wearing a walking boot. He had surgery Monday morning, and On3 reports there is still optimism he returns this season. If his recovery goes well, one target is the November 7 game against Alabama. Weeks had 23 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss through four games.
Daeden Hopkins wins SEC honors again. Missouri's sophomore defensive lineman was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for the second time this season. He had four tackles and 3.5 sacks in Missouri's 31-24 loss at Mississippi State. Rock M Nation reports the Hermann native ranks third in the SEC with six sacks through four games.
Chris Cole named SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Georgia's junior linebacker from Salem, Virginia, earned the award for his play in the Bulldogs' win over Oklahoma. No. 2 Georgia is 4-0 and has won every game by at least four touchdowns while scoring 40-plus points each time.
Auburn women's basketball loses Sira Thienou. The guard tore an ACL and will miss the upcoming season, ESPN reports.
Golf: Auburn leads the Ben Hogan Collegiate. No. 1 Auburn leads after 36 holes at 6-under 554 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. No. 11 Alabama is tied for second at 4-under 556 (274-282). Georgia sits tied for 11th, and JD Culbreth is tied for fifth individually at 3 under.
Around the league: Vanderbilt soccer's Sydney Watts and Mia Hebert earned SEC weekly honors after multi-goal performances. Missouri volleyball (8-5, 1-0 SEC) opened league play by beating Vanderbilt and heads to Ole Miss next. Georgia gymnastics released its 2027 schedule, which opens January 10. Oklahoma men's basketball also filled out its staff with two additions.
