LEAD STORY: Minchey's Debut Puts Him in Company With Tim Couch
Kenny Minchey needed exactly one career start to write himself into Kentucky's record book. In the Wildcats' 45-13 win over Youngstown State on September 5, Minchey threw for more than 300 yards with four touchdown passes, completed better than 65 percent of his attempts and did not throw an interception — a stat line that, according to UK statistician Corey Price, has been matched in a season opener by exactly one other quarterback in program history: Tim Couch, at Louisville on September 5, 1998.
Twenty-eight years to the day. That symmetry is fun; the film underneath it matters more. Minchey spread the ball to nine different receivers and found four different targets for touchdowns, the kind of distribution that suggests Kentucky's passing game is built on progressions rather than a single favorite. Big Blue Nation watched an offense that looked fluid from the opening series, and the margin never seriously tightened.
The schedule now hands Minchey a chance at a far more exclusive Kentucky list — one Couch also occupies. Alabama comes next, and a quarterback who set this bar in his first start gets to find out immediately how portable the performance is. Nonconference numbers in September get relitigated fast in this league, but the debut earned Minchey the benefit of the doubt heading into the biggest week of his career.

Missouri's Simmons grades out elite. Austin Simmons posted a 91.0 PFF grade in Missouri's 54-14 season-opening win, ranking as the fifth-best Power Four quarterback of Week 1. The Tigers also placed three offensive linemen and skill players on PFF's SEC Offensive Team of the Week: WR Donovan Olugbode, LT Whit Hafer and C Colin Soerensen. Simmons threw no interceptions in his Missouri debut.
Alabama volleyball sweeps. The Crimson Tide never trailed in a 3-0 win over Grambling State on Monday night at Foster Auditorium in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama golf sits fifth. The No. 18 Crimson Tide men carded an even-par 283 in the opening round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate in Grand Haven, Michigan, standing alone in fifth place.
Fall golf openers across the league. Tennessee's women are in contention through 36 holes at the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, South Carolina, opening their 2026-27 fall slate. Vanderbilt sits ninth through 36 holes with Sara Im pacing the Commodores at 2-under. LSU's women got strong opening-day rounds from Tejedo and Fiorellini.
Weekly honors. Molly Tuozzo was named SEC Player of the Week, with DeLeye and O'Brien also earning conference recognition.
Poll watch. The next AP Top 25 is delayed a day because Week 1 stretched through Monday's Labor Day slate. Georgia, which hosted Tennessee State on September 5 at Sanford Stadium, is among the teams with a case to move up after No. 2 Oregon labored past Boise State.

The one recruiting-adjacent item of note comes out of Austin, where Nike added 13 Texas student-athletes across eight sports to its Blue Ribbon Elite NIL program as part of the "Volume 2" class — a reminder that brand infrastructure is now part of the pitch inside the SEC's newest football-power footprint.
GAMES TO WATCH
No SEC football is scheduled today, but the indoor slate is live. Ole Miss volleyball hosts Clemson tonight at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center to close out a home swing. Missouri volleyball, sitting at 3-1, had its Wrigley Field date with Nebraska cancelled Sunday and now travels to No. 5 Louisville on Wednesday night for the SEC/ACC Challenge — a top-five measuring stick the Tigers didn't get over the weekend.
On the football calendar: Missouri makes the short trip to Kansas on Friday as an early betting favorite; Georgia welcomes Western Kentucky to Sanford Stadium on Saturday with a 12:45 p.m. kickoff and hot conditions expected again; Mississippi State, coming off its opener against ULM at Davis Wade Stadium behind defensive lineman Trevion Williams, turns to Minnesota; and Kentucky gets Alabama with Minchey's stock at its all-time high.
