SEC Morning Report: Kenny Minchey's Big Day in College Station Sets the Tone for Kentucky

LEAD STORY: Minchey's Growth Drives Kentucky's Upset at Kyle Field

Kenny Minchey played the best game of his short career as a starter in Kentucky's upset of a top-10 Texas A&M team at Kyle Field last Saturday. The Wildcats quarterback completed 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 14 yards per attempt against one of the SEC's better defenses.

The game came one week after a tough outing against Alabama, when Minchey went 18 of 31 for 136 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Kentucky's head coach said on Wednesday's SEC coaches teleconference that the quarterback "played within himself, played within the system, and got the ball out quickly." He also said better pass protection gave Minchey time to see the field. He described Minchey as "extremely poised" and said "nothing seems to really rattle him." He added that he expects Minchey to keep improving this week.

Minchey has only three career starts, so the jump from Week 2 to Week 3 is the main storyline in Lexington. He went 14 of 18 at Kyle Field, and his accuracy and quick decisions changed how Kentucky's offense looks. If the protection holds up, the Wildcats have a quarterback who can win on the road in the SEC.

Senior linebacker Zakari Tillman, who has not played this season, is listed as probable.
• Volleyball roundup: No. 3 Kentucky beat Vanderbilt. Samantha Wunsch led the Commodores with 16 kills. Georgia came back to beat South Carolina in five sets (25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-10) in the SEC opener at Stegeman Coliseum. Missouri fell to No. 1 Nebraska 3-0 in Lincoln and is now 7-5.

RECRUITING BUZZ

No new SEC football commitments came in overnight. On the basketball side, Rock M Nation's podcast reported that Missouri landed four-star prospect Cameron Barnes. Mizzou men's basketball has also started practice. The Tigers play exhibitions at Kansas State (Oct. 23) and UNLV (Oct. 29) and open the regular season against Cleveland State on Nov. 3. CBS Sports reported that LSU's basketball staff explained what it called an "unconventional" four-player roster ahead of the season.

GAMES TO WATCH

No SEC games are scheduled today. Here are Saturday's key matchups:

• Oklahoma at Georgia: This is only the second meeting between the two programs. The first was the Rose Bowl after the 2017 season. Georgia beat Arkansas 45-17 last week, mostly by running the ball; its biggest passing play was a 61-yard completion from Gunner Stockton to Craig Dandridge. Oklahoma comes in unranked after a loss to Michigan and a close win over New Mexico. Quarterback John Mateer relies heavily on 6-foot-5 senior tight end Rocky Beers. Georgia's pass protection struggled last week, and that will be tested against Oklahoma's defensive front.
• Texas A&M at LSU: Both teams are coming off hard weeks. The Aggies are trying to recover from the loss to Kentucky without Bussey. LSU's secondary is short-handed and is still changing personnel.

He can hurt defenses as a passer and a runner, and he is the biggest test of Missouri's season so far.
