SEC Scouts Football Power Rankings — Week 1

The regular season is here, every SEC team sits at 0-0, and the great equalizer of August has arrived: nobody has played a down that counts in 2026. But power rankings abhor a vacuum, and our formula doesn't start from scratch. Recent form, quality results, and AP poll positioning still separate the contenders from the pack — and by that measure, Texas begins the year as the SEC's team to beat.

The Longhorns top our Week 1 rankings with a 29.5 Power Score, boosted by a 4-1 mark over their last five games — the best recent form in the conference — and a 27-17 win over Texas A&M in their most recent outing. Georgia (26.5) and Oklahoma (24.5) round out the top three, though both enter the season looking to wash out the taste of their last results.

The real intrigue lives in the middle. Vanderbilt checks in at No. 5 — ahead of Texas A&M, LSU, and Alabama — after hanging 45 on Tennessee last time out. And down at No. 12, South Carolina presents the week's biggest disconnect: the AP poll has the Gamecocks at No. 11, but a 1-4 stretch over their last five drags their Power Score to 16.5. Someone is wrong, and Week 1 starts settling the argument.

The Rankings

1. Texas (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 29.5

The formula's clear No. 1. Texas is the only SEC team riding a 4-1 mark over its last five, and the Longhorns closed their last outing with a 27-17 win over Texas A&M. The AP poll has them at No. 5; our numbers say the gap between Texas and the field is wider than that.

2. Georgia (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 26.5

The Bulldogs sit at No. 3 in the AP poll despite a 3-2 stretch and a 39-34 home loss to Ole Miss in their most recent game. The talent-driven poll respect is baked into their 26.5 score, but that last result is the reason there's daylight between Georgia and the top spot.

3. Oklahoma (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 24.5

The Sooners went 3-2 over their last five but dropped their finale to Alabama, 34-24, at home. AP voters have Oklahoma 10th; the formula is slightly kinder at No. 3, essentially in a dead heat with Ole Miss at 24.5.

4. Ole Miss (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 24.5

Nobody enters the season with a better last result than the Rebels, who walked into Athens and beat Georgia 39-34. Their 24.5 score ties Oklahoma, and the No. 9 AP ranking suggests the voters are still catching up to what that road win said about this team.

5. Vanderbilt (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 22.5

Believe it. The Commodores demolished Tennessee 45-24 in Knoxville last time out, own a 3-2 mark over their last five, and open the season ranked No. 15 in the AP poll. The formula slots them fifth in the SEC — ahead of three teams ranked above them by the voters.

6. Texas A&M (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 21.5

The Aggies are the AP poll's No. 8 team, but a 2-3 finish over their last five and a 27-17 loss at Texas cap their Power Score at 21.5. The poll bonus is doing real work here; the recent form says A&M has something to prove immediately.

7. LSU (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 19.5

A 2-3 stretch and a 17-13 loss at Oklahoma leave the Tigers seventh, tied on points with Alabama. LSU's No. 11 AP ranking keeps them in the top half, but the last five games offer little momentum to build on.

8. Alabama (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 19.5

The Crimson Tide closed their last outing with a quality result — a 34-24 win at Oklahoma — but the broader 2-3 stretch over their last five is the drag on the score. Alabama enters at No. 13 in the AP poll, and the formula essentially agrees: good enough to be dangerous, too inconsistent lately to be trusted.

9. Auburn (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 17.5

The Tigers went 2-3 down the stretch and lost their finale to Alabama, 27-20, at home. The No. 22 AP ranking gives them a modest bump into a three-way tie at 17.5 with Missouri and Tennessee.

10. Missouri (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 17.5

Missouri won its last outing, 31-17 at Arkansas, and enters ranked No. 25. The 2-3 mark over the last five keeps the Tigers from climbing higher, but they're one of only five SEC teams that won their most recent game.

11. Tennessee (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 17.5

The Volunteers carry a No. 20 AP ranking but also the memory of a 45-24 home loss to Vanderbilt in their last game. Tied at 17.5 with Auburn and Missouri, Tennessee needs an emphatic season-opening statement to change the conversation.

12. South Carolina (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 16.5

Here's the week's biggest poll-versus-formula gap. The AP has the Gamecocks at No. 11; our numbers see a team that went 1-4 over its last five and lost its last game by a single point, 31-30 at Texas A&M. The one-point margin says they're close. The 1-4 record says close isn't the same as good.

13. Florida (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 16.5

The Gators are ranked No. 13 in the AP poll but limped through a 1-4 stretch capped by a 31-11 home loss to Tennessee. Like South Carolina, Florida's poll standing is propping up a Power Score that the recent results don't support.

14. Kentucky (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 16.5

An interesting inversion: Kentucky is unranked but went 3-2 over its last five — better recent form than three teams ahead of it. The 45-17 loss at Vanderbilt in the finale and the missing AP bonus hold the Wildcats at 16.5.

15. Miss State (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 7.5

The Bulldogs enter with an 0-2 mark in their tracked recent games and no AP ranking, producing a 7.5 score that sits well below the rest of the league. There's nowhere to go but up, and a clean 0-0 slate is exactly the reset this team needs.

16. Arkansas (0-0, 0-0 SEC) — Power Score: 7.5

An 0-5 run over the last five — the worst recent form in the conference — and a 31-17 home loss to Missouri in the finale put the Razorbacks at the bottom. Tied with Miss State at 7.5, Arkansas opens the season needing wins, full stop.

Stock Up

Vanderbilt. A 45-24 road blowout of Tennessee, a 3-2 recent stretch, and a No. 15 AP ranking add up to the No. 5 spot in these rankings — ahead of Texas A&M, LSU, and Alabama. The formula is buying what the Commodores' recent results are selling.

Ole Miss. The 39-34 win at Georgia is the single best result any SEC team carries into Week 1. The Rebels' 24.5 Power Score has them in a virtual tie for third, a spot ahead of where the AP poll (No. 9) places them.

Kentucky. No AP ranking, but a 3-2 mark over the last five outpaces the recent form of South Carolina, Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee. If the Wildcats stack early wins, the poll bonus arrives and the score jumps.

Stock Down

South Carolina. The No. 11 AP ranking and the 1-4 recent record cannot both be right. The formula sides with the record and slots the Gamecocks 12th — a full poll-tier below where the voters have them.

Arkansas. An 0-5 stretch is the conference's worst, and the 31-17 home loss to Missouri closed it out. The Razorbacks' 7.5 Power Score reflects a team with no positive momentum to carry into the opener.

Tennessee. The Volunteers' last impression was a 21-point home loss to Vanderbilt, and the formula has them 11th despite a No. 20 AP ranking — behind the very team that beat them.

What to Watch as the Season Opens

With every team at 0-0, Week 1 results will move these rankings more than any week all season. The questions that matter most: Can South Carolina and Florida — both carrying top-13 AP rankings on 1-4 recent form — validate the voters, or will the formula's skepticism prove out? Does Vanderbilt's No. 5 slot survive contact with the regular season, or was that 45-point outburst against Tennessee a high-water mark? And at the top, Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss are separated by five points of Power Score — the first team in that group to post a convincing win takes command of the September conversation. Point differential, currently zeroed out for all 16 teams, starts counting now. It's 15 percent of the formula, and after this weekend, nobody's ledger will be blank.
