LEAD STORY: Florida's Quarterback Question Hangs Over Trip to Austin

The Florida Gators may be heading into Saturday's game at No. 7 Texas with a new starting quarterback. According to CBS Sports, Aaron Philo is expected to be listed as questionable on tonight's SEC player availability report. Philo hurt his shoulder in last week's 38-19 loss to South Carolina, and his practice work has been limited since. That could open the door for redshirt freshman Tramell Jones to make his first career start.

Jones was a consensus four-star prospect in the 2025 class out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin. He redshirted last season and has played in four games this fall, going 23-of-29 (79.3 percent) for 252 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Pro Football Focus graded only one of those picks as a turnover-worthy throw. Philo has been productive when healthy. Against South Carolina he threw for 227 yards and a touchdown and added 32 rushing yards.

Florida did get some good news on Wednesday. Pete Thamel reported that star wide receiver Vernell Brown III practiced and was "the best he's looked" since his knee injury. He has a "real shot" to play in Austin after missing the last two games. Before the injury, Brown had 17 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Texas may also get help on its defensive front. Per Inside Texas, sophomore defensive lineman Justus Terry practiced Wednesday and is expected to be available. Terry has missed four games with a toe injury he suffered in pregame warmups before the Longhorns' win over Ohio State. Both teams need a win after Week 6 losses. Texas fell 27-24 to Oklahoma, and Florida dropped to 2-2 in conference play.

RECRUITING BUZZ

No SEC programs added commitments in the last 12 hours. With conference play heating up, recruiting news should pick up again as official visit weekends line up with marquee home games.

GAMES TO WATCH

No games are scheduled for today, but the rest of the week has plenty to watch:

  • Thursday: Ranked Mississippi State soccer hosts Oklahoma at 6 p.m. CT at the MSU Soccer Field. It's the first time the Sooners have visited Starkville.
  • Upcoming: The Wildcats go on the road to face No. 21 Auburn.
  • Saturday: Florida visits No. 7 Texas. Tonight's availability report should settle the Gators' quarterback situation. Alabama also travels to Tennessee in a key game for both teams. The Crimson Tide (5-1, 3-1 SEC) are trying to rebound from the Georgia loss, and the Vols (5-1, 2-1) are coming off a 24-17 win over Arkansas behind DeSean Bishop's 138 rushing yards.

Georgia leads the SEC standings at 4-0, with Alabama and Kentucky right behind at 3-1.
